Type Locality and Naming

It was named by the Regional Survey Party of Liaoning Province in 1976. The naming section is located in the area of Songshu Gully of the Dadianzi Township, Tieling County, Liaoning Province.

Synonym: (松树沟组)


Lithology and Thickness

It is composed of grey-white and yellow-brown sandy conglomerate, siltstone and grey-black shale, intercalated with coal seams, with a thickness of about 236 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It overlies disconformably the Qianwanling Fm

Upper contact

Regionally, the schematic strat column indicates the next younger unit as Nankangzhuang Fm

Regional extent

The formation is distributed only in the area of the Songshu Gully in the Dadianzi Basin.

Fossils

It yields bivalve fossils as represented essentially by Ferganoconcha elongata; and plant fossils as represented by Coniopteris burejensis, C. hymenophylloides, C. simplex, Cladophlebis whitbyensis, Raphaelia stricta, Elatocladus sp. and Podozamites sp.


Age 

Schematic strat column in the previous "red Chinese Lexicon" had implied that the Songshugou Fm spanned middle of Middle Jurassic.
